Patient safety and drug surveillance and are the key focus of the Pharmacovigilance Working Group (PVWG). From early drug development until the marketing authorization and throughout the entire lifecycle of a product, pharmacovigilance is a key element for classical medicines as well as new therapeutic approaches such as gene and cell therapy.
Scope
In line with the IFAPP’s overall strategy and mission to promote Pharmaceutical Medicine, the PVWG aim to emphasize the role of pharmacovigilance within the medical sciences in detecting, analyzing and preventing potential risks associated with drug therapy.
Objectives
- Enhancing the awareness of pharmacovigilance in healthcare professionals (HCPs) non-HCPs
- Facilitating patient engagement in pharmacovigilance (considering that patient safety at the center of all pharmacovigilance activities)
- Contributing to education & training in clinical safety and in post-authorization safety
- Sharing knowledge about pharmacovigilance approaches for new therapies (e.g. long-term follow-up requirements for cell & gene therapies in different regions/countries)
- Exploring new technologies in pharmacovigilance (e.g. automation, generative artificial intelligence (AI)), spreading knowledge and potential applications for them
- Supporting the further evolution of pharmacovigilance legislation and/or its harmonization across regions
- Interacting with pharmacovigilance groups at NMAs and collaborating with other global / international organizations dealing with pharmacovigilance topics
- Fostering the exchange of know-how and best practices in daily business among the WG members
- Being a forum for those IFAPP members who would like to actively engage in pharmacovigilance matters at global level
Measures
Concrete measures are laid down in a work plan that is drafted by the group and reviewed on an annual basis.
Reports about the PVWG’s activities are published in the IFAPP TODAY as applicable.
